Thulium  element was discovered by Cliff in Sweden in 1879 and named Thulium after the old name Thule in Scandinavia. The main uses of thulium are as follows.

(1) Thulium is used as a light and light medical radiation source. After being irradiated in the second new class after the internal radiation limit of the nuclear reactor, thulium produces an identical device that can send x-rays. It can be used to manufacture a stool sugar type blood irradiator. This radiometer can transform Ta Xiu 169 into thulium 170 under the effect of high school children. It emits radiation to irradiate blood and reduce white blood cells, which are responsible for organ transplant rejection reaction. Thus reducing the early rejection response of organs.

(2) Thulium element can also be applied in clinical diagnosis and treatment of tumors because it has a high affinity for swelling tissues. Heavy rare earths have a greater affinity than light rare earths, especially thulium element, which has the highest affinity.

(3) Thulium is used as the activator LaOBr: Br (blue) in the phosphor used for the X-ray intensifying screen to enhance the optical sensitivity, thus reducing the radiation and harm of X-ray to people. Compared with the previous Calcium tungstate intensifying screen, thulium can reduce the dose of X-ray by 50%, which has important practical significance in medical applications.

(4) Thulium can also be used as an additive in new lighting source metal halide lamps.

(5) Adding Tm3+to glass can make rare earth glass laser materials, which are currently the solid-state laser materials with the largest output pulse volume and highest output power. Tm3+can also be used as an activation ion for rare earth upconversion laser materials.
